Feeling overwhelmed at work

If stress builds up slowly over time, it can be difficult to know where to start. You might be feeling anxious or upset, or you might find yourself losing your temper for no reason. If you’re feeling overwhelmed:

  • Ask for some support. It is important to do this both at work (by speaking to your manager) and at home (by speaking to family or friends).
  • Take some time off if necessary – if in doubt see your GP.
  • Give yourself some time to recover before you make any big decisions.
  • When you feel able, sit down with a friend or a colleague and list the problems you’ve been having. Where is the pressure coming from – from other people or from yourself? What do you feel would happen if you let go of some of your commitments?
  • Ask your friend how they see things and try to listen to their comments and suggestions.
  • Start to come up with some solutions between you.
  • Make a note of the ‘warning signs’ you noticed when you were becoming overwhelmed.
  • Have a plan of what action you’ll take if you notice these signs again.
  • Time management skills are easily learnt with practice, and will help you to feel more in control and more relaxed. They will help you to do a better job, and will also allow you more free time to spend with your family and friends.
